The Frum Family plot is designed to be a welcoming spot for all who wish to visit Miranda and spend time contemplating the surrounding beauty of historic Glenwood. The garden itself was planned and planted with native flowers, grasses, and shrubs. The headstone and benches are composed of rammed earth, a sustainable and ancient process in which a mix of gravel, sand, and a binding agent is compressed into a form to create rock. This process allowed the incorporation of small amounts of dirt, stones, shells etc., collected by friends and family from Miranda’s favorite places around the world – among them the Washington, DC backyard in which Miranda grew up, the beaches of Tel Aviv and gardens of Paris and London, the hiking trails of Los Angeles, her summer home on Lake Ontario, and the entry to her apartment building in Brooklyn Heights Miranda she spent the last days of her life. The colors in the layers of the headstone represent the blue of Lake Ontario, its gray rocky shoreline, the green fields and meadows of the county, and finally the lightness of the sky.
The rammed earth structures were crafted by Prince Edward County-based Aerecura and designed by Jeffrey Forrest of Stacklab. The garden is the work of local landscaper, Ben O’Brien, of Wild By Design. The bronze statue of Ringo, Miranda’s beloved and inseparable Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, was sculpted by British artist Tanya Russell.
It’s a Jewish tradition to place rocks rather than flowers on gravesites. Rocks engraved with meaningful quotes chosen by Miranda’s family and friends are scattered throughout the garden. We hope you enjoy finding them and reading them but please do not remove them. They have been placed there by those who knew and loved Miranda.
